Italy

We have been lucky enough to spend our halfterm break in Italy, in the Alps near the border with Switzerland.

We have been a long time figuring out how on earth we could afford to take six of us skiing, but after some serious saving of the pennies and the discovery of a basic but lovely family run pensione to stay in, we have just had a wonderful week together, phones off, skies on, and more delicious handmade pasta and pizza than I care to remember!

The sun shone, and these photos are only as good as my phone could muster,

great fun was had, and personal achievements were made, but best of all, we were all together with only snow and food to distract!

On the way home, we stopped the car at a mountain town called Chatillon, where we found not only astounding coloured houses and breathtaking views across mountains and gorges,

but also found we had stumbled upon an annual festival of slightly surreal fancy dress and carnival floats,

Suffice it to say that smiling foreigners were fair game as confetti targets, we are still finding confetti falling out of our clothes!

It all got me thinking that pennies saved for experiences are quite as precious, maybe more so, than pennies saved for stuff. And you've got to love Italy!

  1. My camera doesn't take such nice pictures as your phone. It looks like a brilliant time was had by all.

  5. Yay! Welcome back! Looks like you had an amazing holiday in an amazing place. I've been lucky to visit family in that neck of the woods- but only in the summertime. It's absolutely gorgeous then, too.

So, wait, I'm just realizing you must have traveled to Switzerland by CAR?? Lucky ducks : )! How long does that take?

  9. American in Bath, the camera is on the iphone and I have never had one remotely as good before, it can zoom and everything!

Magic Bean, it was fab and I guess the memories are what it is all about really.

VS, it was a great week, thanks.

Sarah, we all have a real weakness for Italy here, I harbour desires to visit Liguria, on the coast - have you been there??

Hi Jaime, I had forgotton your surname is Italian isn't it - you still have family there? Top excuse for visiting! We actually flew to Turin and drove from there about 2 hrs to Cervinia Breuil - very high up in the Alps, just in Italy still - the other side of the Matterhorn from Zermatt in Switzerland. Driving from our house all the way would take about 3 hrs to The Channel, and about 12 hrs nonstop across France and Italy to Cervinia. We have done it as a couple, but couldn't face it with 4 kids in tow and only one week to play with!

Hi Ann Marie, welcome to Wild Acre, thanks so much for visiting.

Alice, hello my friend, it was a top treat and will be long remembered!
